Ideas Orchard: the Community Hub

Hi guys! We discussed setting up our own blogs that link into the main community blog after the lecture today, and I’ve worked out how to do it. Everyone can set up their own blogs and then add themselves as administrators on the Ideas Orchard main site, and it’s really easy to do, but there’s no obligation to do it if you don’t want to, you can carry on posting with the ladystrawberry account. This just lets us have our own spaces linked to the blog. Here’s how to do it, if you’re interested.

Essay Ideas

Heya,

Wanted to set up a separate thread for us to discuss our personal essays (the one’s that are due in the spring term) as don’t want them to get confused with the presentation and case study stuff for this term. Our essay: “focuses on one of the cultural debates engaged in by the course in term one”. Thankfully, Lara has posted elsewhere about hers, so have pasted it in here:As im sure ive mentioned before

“i’m thinking of doing The Royal Court’s New writing policy. I suppose I would tie this in to how they try to make community based projects (often with Arab based communities) and therefore it is public art.
Also it is ‘Art for the Masses’ in that it is written by anyone- non Culture with a Captial C like Shakespeare for example.
Similarly, copyright laws encourage people to write new works such as this.

What is everyone else thinking?

Let’s get discussing!

Case Study

Hey guys, I thought it might be useful to clear up what I understand of the case study so that we can get things underway (and you can correct me if I am totally wrong!). Our case study is supposed to be related to the topics we have discussed in seminars and this blog. Although we will then present this topic collectively as a group (in week 9), we will be assessed on individual write-ups, which the presentation will form part of.

So, I think the first thing we need to do is to decide upon a topic, whether this be related to the ideas from Adorno, mass culture, copyrights, network art or any other topics in relation to the seminars. What do you guys think?

Sanny.

Adorno

To discuss what literature we brought in today that shows contextualisation/ideas in Adorno’s essay.

Hi Everyone!

Hey everyone,

Thought it might be a good idea to write up our aims and things just to keep us on track!

For Seminar Three:

How do writers benefit the community? Should they? Does writing? In what contexts?

What is Public Art? How might literature be involved?

Are there any models of writing projects that you can think of that involve more than one author? Communities?

How do you extend your ideas as a writer to involve the wider public?

What other models for writing in the community can you think of beyond running a Creative Writing style workshop?

What might be the benefits/losses for a writer?

What is site specific writing?

Should public funding for the arts involve writers and writing? How? To what ends?

What is the function of literature in relation to funding for grants?

Who funds writing? Why? How? To do what?

RESEARCH

BRING EXAMPLES OF PUBLIC ART/SITE-SPECIFIC WORK THAT INVOLVES WORDS/WRITING.

Also: consider any interesting ideas or useful contacts/websites/books for our seminar presentations!
